also a good example is the one of owls

if owls notice in their habitat there is not much food around
they don't make eggs
because they are smart enough to know that when the egg comes out their young have no food and will die of hunger

so they wait till next year and re-evaluate the situation

Not to dispute the marvel of it, but I believe that falls firmly under instinct.

The possibilty of malnutrition resulting in the lack of hormonal release is very likely; and let's face it, the biochemical programming of hormone and protein release-triggers is also likely the source of 'instinct'.

For example, an owl who is sexually mature for the first time may exhibit this behavior, despite having no foreknowledge of how it may affect her chicks.

Then again, perhaps we should query an orinthologist. My specialty occurs below 1.616199 x 10-35 meters. Owls, and their prey, tend to be much larger.
