I've spent the past 8 months duking it out with two major corporations who happen to control two critical financial elements in my life: my car loan and my mortgage. Both companies made huge accounting errors against me; their mistakes made it look like I've been delinquent, and they've hurt my credit. It took finally contacting my state's consumer protection division for my mortgage company to reverse their accounting mistake--it's the kind of thing that would take any monkey two keystrokes, basically switching numbers from one side of the ledger to the other. And it took a LOT of intervention from my car insurance company to straighten things out with our jackass car loan people.

All I can say after all this is, whenever possible, shop locally for these things. Use your local banks, have a place where you can walk in and sit down and talk to somebody face to face. Trying to straighten these things out over the phone with anonymous representatives--who may not be the same person you talk to next time--is frustrating as fucking hell.

I've since switched all this to my local credit union.

The offending parties, by the way, were GMAC and AMC Mortgage Services. Do not--I repeat, do not--do business with these giant corporate idiots.

My blood boils just thinking about it. I hate talking on the phone when it concerns loans, bills, whatever. What really annoys me is when I get a fucking voicemail or some pre-recorded git telling me to press a button for this or that department.

i generally hate when people call my house, but i particularly hate those fucking waste of space monotone messages asking you who you're gonna vote for in this that or the other election.

Banks are the worst at winding people up.

Toilet & Bowels 07.18.2006 10:10 AM

Well, I've learned my lesson. I will never, ever choose to use an out-of-town car loan bank or mortgage company again. It's impossible to deal with the automatons on the other end of the line when you need to fix a problem.

It feels so much better to have everything at my credit union now. I can walk 5 blocks from my work office and see a real person. Plus, I really do believe in keeping the money in my own community, when I can.

Tokolosh 07.18.2006 10:20 AM

I've recently moved to a new apartment and my electrical bill is through the same company. I've had to phone a number of times to tell them that bills should be stopped at my old residence, but no... Those cunts keep sending me bills for both addresses and if I don't pay them up front, they'll cut all my electricity where I am now. First pay and then they reverse it.

Tokolosh 07.18.2006 10:24 AM

This is a great thread for whining & bitching, by the way. :D

The reason was, apart from their general incompetence, they wouldn't let me pay a cheque into my acount because they 'aren't a clearing bank'!?!?!?! Apparantly, they're just a pretend bank.

So I opened an account with Bradford and Bingley. Bradford and Bingley are much nicer, and they don't hide behind plastic screens either. And they gave me some shares.

Except that they'll take a fucking age to repay you. British Gas owe us £40 since we switched to NPower, and they're being a complete pain in the arse about it. Delays, excuses, claims that they still haven't had the meter reading etc. And every time we call about it, they insist that they have no record of our previous call.

Our experience, combined with their generally unethical behaviour, leads me to believe that no-one should ever do business with them. At all.

Tv Licence people i found to be honest and reliable. When i moved into a place that already had a Tv Licence they refunded me whatever i had paid upfront within one week.

sonicl 07.18.2006 10:37 AM

All the gas and electric companies are crooks so far as I can tell. I've had people at my door from two of the companies claiming that I'm being charged at the wrong tariff and I just need to "sign these forms" to get it corrected - e.g. sign up to get my energy supplier changed, but they weren't going to mention that.

Tokolosh 07.18.2006 10:41 AM

That's what you get with the privatization of electricity, railways, etc.
