What varieties do you play? I've been playing poker for about 15 years now; just very low stakes with friends, no real money to be made. I don't think I waste money, but the amount I'm willing to spend on antiques and old books is seen as a waste by some of my acquantances. |
We usually start off with 5-card stud and then move onto other games at the will of the Gods (ie, if anyone gets a straight or higher they may then change the game). Texas hold 'em goes down pretty well, thanks to the TV, and makes it easier to get new people in to fleece the money from. Southern Cross is my weak spot, and my regular poker people are more than too aware of this. Annoyingly.

We play by rotating the deal; each person deals three hands, choosing which type to play, usually a different style each hand. The variations are pretty much unlimited and sometimes insane - for the most part it's hold 'em, spit, baseball, draw, misere, cincinatti, but towards the end of a session any number of wild cards might be introduced at the dealer's whim. My preferred thing is to turn any hand into a misere game. Spit misere is fun, I think.
Like I say, though, very low stakes and a lot of fun. Much skitting and aping of TV poker presenters and players - silly nicknames, stupid slang names invented on the spot for particular cards or hands. Fun. |
We had a very drunken game last year where no one was allowed in without a hat of some sort. Of course, every gets the silliest hat they can. The rule was you couldn't take your hat off, and you were to doff you hat at a good hand. Of course, one chap could only find a motorcycle helmet. Which meant he couldn't see his hands for shit, and ended up betting blind. 'Twas most comical. The best £1.25 I ever made.

Yeah, I agree--I truly believe music, like books, is a great investment for those of us who appreciate the returns it can bring. I just mentioned CDs and records because generally other people who don't fully appreciate the obsession (like my wife) see them as wasting money. |
wine, women and amatuer dramatics

Records and alcohol, but aside that I don't think I really waste any money. I've been wearing pretty much the same clothes since I was 16. I would buy new clothes but then I couldn't buy as many records as I want.
I also try not to spend fortunes in food; I very rarely buy sweets or anything. |
Booze, Cheap Hookers, Cd's, Magazines, Drugs, Books, Shoes.....
