batreleaser 07.05.2008 07:43 AM

i went online to get the tickets but they were already gone. so insteads i got wasted on the beach and listened to 'sister', just as good right? wrong.

atsonicpark 07.05.2008 07:57 AM

what song is thurston playing the slide on?

atsonicpark 07.05.2008 07:58 AM

also curious if they ever get sick of playing bull in the heather...

that's easily one of their best songs, so I'm glad they play it but wow.

It seems like Sonic Youth really know what songs everyone likes by them... you never see 'em playing panty lies..

100%. He uses a slide for noise. I believe the pic is from or near "wastewood rockers"

mil_pl 07.05.2008 08:34 AM

is there a video for this show ?
or just audio ?

It seemed during the encores, they'd exited twice as the announcers made it sound like they were coming back for a 3rd time. In one of those 'two' encores, I thought I heard one of them say something to that effect. Oh well....I misinterpreted. Thanks for being gentle. :o

Those aren't bad pictures Ripchord, did you get soaked ?

situasean 07.05.2008 09:37 AM

The rain was perfect. almost seemed timed at moments. I hadn't seen SY since the Dirty tour (which was my first concert besides my parents taking me to Stevie Wonder), and it seems they haven't aged a day. This was a great concert and I wish WFMU would put the audio up so I could hear it again. Thanks to SY for keeping their music alive. I'm still tingling.

I also saw SY on the Dirty tour in Newport, RI in June of '92. No recording of that has surfaced, but I keep looking. Your absolutely right about the band, they've LOST NONE of their energy and performance ability. Keep checking the playlist archive's of HotRod on WFMU.org

There is a page already for yesterday, but no link to the SY show...YET. Hopefully it WILL appear.

Nah, it didn't rain that much.

I like daytime shows because theres... daylight. And I mad made eye contact with Thurston and Kim and it was AWESOME.

So they acknowledged you ?

Any winks from Thurston ? :p

RanaldoNecro 07.05.2008 10:59 AM

Thurston played slide on 100& and kneeled down before Kim on the stage thrahsing out. It was very funny.

There was aot of humour and light-hearted ness in the show which made it fun. Lee was laughing all the time...

There was serious intensity when T jumped in press pit

The vibe was incredible at the show...best at a concert in years....

The recording will surface quickly as it was broadcast

Thx SY

nicfit 07.05.2008 11:07 AM

yeh, the feelies set is up on dime already and a "nyctaper correspondent" should provide an aud recording for the sy gig, so we might end up with different sources and do a megamixsupercoolsoundingedit.

Well, you never see em playing 85% of their back catalog, which contains some pretty amazing songs that I know people would love to hear. It seems like they keep short, noisy rockers in the set (100%, Drunken Butterfly, World Looks Red, White Kross, etc) but really, who hasn't heard these songs a trillion times if they've been a fairly regular SY concert-goer (perhaps less on World Looks Red).

They play 100% with pretty much zero energy, and have since they brought it back circa 2000. Too slow, not enough noise. Does anyone disagree? Now, "Bull in the Heather" is one of my all-time favorite songs, and the album version is absolutely perfect, but when I hear it live I just can't get past the lack of harmonics which make that intro riff so haunting. I'd forgive it if they still always paired it with the magnificent "Starfield Road" (hey, it's short! it's noisy! it rocks!) but unfortunately...

K, I'll stop raining all over this thread now. This IS an amazing set list, regardless. Probably the best of the year.

neptuneg 07.05.2008 11:27 AM

RanaldoN/nicfit: thanks for the recording info!

Chris: totally agree with you on 100%, and I wish they would play Starfield Road as well... I'm also hoping that we see some more from Washing Machine at some point, but that's probably not going to happen.

agoston 07.05.2008 11:30 AM

Yea, that was a dream show for sure. On the way there I was annoying my lady with out-loud pondering of what their set-list would be like, if it would just be Rather Ripper or Daydream. Alas, an awesome retrospective, that I know many people were hoping for. The Daydream songs were on fire. While I was really siked to hear the opening chords to Bull In the Heather, it was kind of a too-mellow version/take.

They had some sweet exclusive WFMU/SY shirts on sale. I know there was
also a limited of 50 one-of a kind poster made that wasn't being sold.

My only real gripe - was that I wish there was BEER being sold there!

nicfit 07.05.2008 12:03 PM

I know it will sound pretty silly to those who actually went there, but having the chance to listen it live online and chatting with some fellow boarders (aaaand "talking" about a show without "talking over" the music is so much better) was mighty fun. So, we all had a sort of spiritual connection ha ha, honestly I have a feeling that the live sound was better than the broadcasted one...dunno why.

agoston 07.05.2008 12:19 PM

the sound was impeccable - vocals were crystal clear at the actual show - definitely a big bonus

drrrtyboots 07.05.2008 12:21 PM

On the 100% comment, of the three times having heard them play it live yesterday was by far the best i've ever heard them play it. And does anyone else feel like it was extremely LOUD specifically for 100%? Crazy shit.

neptuneg 07.05.2008 12:35 PM

It was very loud, but the thing with 100% is that they've slowed it down significantly and no longer perform noise during the verses.
