Being honest, Gervais' Brent is brilliant on so many levels. His sense of subtle tragedy is such that Carroll's basic pantomime rendition simply doesn't compete. I didn't even know that people even considered Carroll's version as better until now.

I hate it when people say about Carroll, oh, but he does things you don't notice. As if we can't spot a lack of subtlety when we see it.

If it were a stand alone show it would warrant praise, but to compare it to the British one really is just silly. Gervais' Brent is one of the finest pieces of acting I've seen. I really mean that.

I think this is where the problem lies. Extras really wasn't a very good series. Gervais' genius (and I do think he is a genius) remains solely in his portrayal of David Brent. Honestly, to put Extras on any kind of par with The Office suggests a real misunderstanding of the latter.
