ps: "With a purported average of some 360 days of sunshine each year, it is nicknamed "The Sunshine City." [1] For that reason, the city is a popular tourist, and retirement destination, especially for those in the United States from colder Northern climates particularly New York, Detroit, and Chicago.

IT'S GEEZERVILLE. EWWWWWW.

I still do support, vaguely and from a distance, the local football and basketball team, though.

oh shit man. then no question that's where you wanna go. just go to the right neighborhood, that's what you want.

i wouldn't live in albuquerque outside of nob hill or downtown-- or maybe this place i saw yesterday behind downtown that looks like it's an old industrial area being renovated. the ability to go out of your door & see humans that don't all look the same is great. having to "drive" to whatever place you really wanna be in kills the whole experience. really, don't compromise there.

yes, jico, it's a portuguese name. i still don't get the joke, but keep trying! :D

There, so after thinking it over, there might still be a little homesickness hidden inside of me.

how does it generally feel going from france to living in germany?

man i love france & detest germany. or is it germans? anyway, berlin is supposed to be great, but still... it's germans! :D

ha ha ha. o man. i do sound like a prejudiced prick but my experience is not good.

gmku 01.25.2008 02:53 PM

Yeah, and that gets to the heart of my problem. Iowa City was like that, where I could virtually walk out my door and be part of a great mix of people and activity. Here I have a loop of a street to walk around and a bunch of tall pines. Pretty. Vacant.

Rob Instigator 01.25.2008 02:53 PM

you gots to move to where the cheap high grade weed can eb found

Rob Instigator 01.25.2008 02:54 PM

Oh God, just the opposite for me. I'd go live in Germany again in a heartbeat. We were there from 84 to 87 and loved every minute.

Of course, we weren't in Berlin. We were near Koblenz, southwestern Germany. Beautiful.

Does somebody maintain a database on this?

FUCKED UP.

well you learned your lesson ha ha.

best wishes with this. or portland again?

anyway i should finish breakfast & get to work. lots to do!!! gotta start packing, calling the internet provider, shit like that.

gmku 01.25.2008 02:59 PM

Yeah, fucked up, indeed. Thanks for making me feel better! lol

Portland might almost be too big and too expensive, from what we've learned. To afford it, we'd fall into the trap again of looking for property out in the sticks. Wouldn't be in any better place than we are now.

I did make my wife promise that we'll live more "centrally" wherever we go next.

gmku 01.25.2008 03:03 PM

And I need to organize my work shit, look at what I procrastinated this week, file some UNPAID invoices, and think about all the work I need to make up next week. It's really hard to get anything done when Gilmore Girls comes on at 11 and the rest of the time, there's scintillating conversation about Heath Ledger and hot girls on the SY forum.

Rob Instigator 01.25.2008 03:13 PM

property out in the sticks is cool if you like eating at chain restaurants and spending your whole life at the walgreens/walmart.
I cannot stand it
I do not understand why people who work downtown in Hosuton where I work choose to live 1-2 hours commute away. makes no sense.

here is a map. my house is 8 miles from downtown houston, and on a good day it takes me 20 minutes to get to work. in the middle fo the night I can get from downtown to my house in 13 minutes. I have to live within 15 minutes of good restaurants and the museums

SpectralJulianIsNotDead 01.25.2008 03:18 PM

My home is over 15 years away and I can never go back there, and if I could, it wouldn't be the same.

Tokolosh 01.25.2008 03:28 PM

I get very melancholic when I think about my past. Where I lived, friends I made, good times we had.
I guess that a part of me stayed behind, when I left. Hard to deal with sometimes.

gmku 01.25.2008 03:35 PM

I can sympathize, Tok. Believe me. I don't think I'll get over moving away from Iowa City.

Rob, I'm envious, man. I'd love to be in that position. I don't go to Wal-mart and chains, though. I just have to drive like hell to get where I want. Downtown Columbia is a good 20 minute drive from my house, and that's where the stuff is--coffee shops, record store, museums, etc.

The weird thing is, nowhere in this whole goddamned town--nowhere!--is there a decent book store! It's all Barnes and Noble. And Columbia is a university town. Talk about FUCKED UP!

Rob Instigator 01.25.2008 03:43 PM

barnes and noble bought up all independent university bookstores in the mid 90's.

gmku 01.25.2008 03:44 PM

I was spoiled in Iowa City. The place has Prairie Lights, an indie book store that has thrived since the early 80s. Such a cool place.

http://www.prairielightsbooks.com/NA...?s=storei nfo

You could go there several nights a week and see great, famous novelists and poets, and hear them read. Heaven, I tell you.
