Alan Licht & Rudolph Grey
Derek Bailey & Keiji Haino but actually i find exclusive guitar duo improv recordings to be quite "lacking" and "pretentious" w/ a few exceptions. |

charlambides are awesome! Anyone know what has happened to Stefan Jaworzyn? ...i found my Ascension cds yesterday after not listening to them in nearly 10 years it seems. btw, Ray Russell kills and was one of the godfather of spazz guitar freakout improv inspiring Moore, Haino, Licht, Grey, O'Rourke and beyond. |
Thank you to all the people who have helped:) I will try to listen to as much as possible...

Mr. Ass backwards? What exactly have I done to offend you? :D I'm gonna kick your ass so hard, so fucking hard that my foot will go through you whole fucking body, and fucking stick out of your mouth, then I'm going to gouge your eye out with my fucking toe. Yeah baby. |
...new sensations Rodrigo Y Gabriela.
Rodrigo Sanchez got told recently that he was on the no-fly list because he shares his name with a suspected terrorist. Thankfully, that's all cleared up now. Quote:
This guy and gal are neither "lacking" or pretentious. Must be why no one here knows about them. |

hahahaha, finally someone with a sense of humour. atari: rodrigo y gabriela are not pretentious?! ugh!! they are "oh, i'm so indie and forward thinking it hurts!" when they are just doing stupid easy listening crap. |
The problem is that it isn't "indie" enough for you, so please, don't try to spin things around like some Republican creep.
They play roots music (many genres though) with some flash in a male/female guitar duo. Now, I'm not some commoner douchebag that agrees with the consensus these players are virtuosos or anything, I just think they can play somewhat, that they play very well together, and that what they play doesn't make me want to puke. Which is more than I can say for these other hipster replies. Seriously, why is being able to play an instrument such a horrible thing? Damn, I know SY fans have a chip-on-their-shoulder, that's nothing new. I just never thought Sonic Youth fans would be so insecure and jealous as to automatically hate anyone that can play a fucking instrument, yet I seem to observe that is the case day-in and day-out. |
You think Haino and Frith have no command of their instruments?
|
... ...Thing is, "good" guitar duos?! That's pretty subjective. Someone like atari would probably puke if you mentioned some of the hair metal heroes from back in the day, but there's no denying they were amazing. Then again, Thurston and Lee aren't exactly the most proficient guitarists but as a duo they're amazing. Depends what you're after, really.
|
Sonci Youth are quite great at what they do. They also make up for a lot with the vocals, lyrics and songs. No artist today can top Sonic Youth. Steve Shelley is a master musician and artist.
Stop trying to change the subject, piss ants. You know exactly what I mean, so fuck off and fuck you. |

where does this "indie enough" crap come from? i really think their music is weak, not because it's not fashionable (in fact, i think they try too hard to be fashionable but that's just me) or because they are not good enough players, their music has no emotional weight at all, it's a big hollow, it's a nothing. i mean, it's just like three degrees better than kenny g or muzak. and well, hipsters might not really like frith, haino, licht, o'rourke, yoshihide, etc. (unless they are aiming to get some cred by name dropping them) because it's not music designed to make them look cool, that's why they prefer the white stripes, interpol, yeah yeah yeahs, it's easily listening for the fashionable herd. whether an experimental guitarist my require more from the listeners. and again, i would love to see rodrigo y gabriel even listen to ornette coleman, let alone try to do a solo guitar version of lonely woman (like i saw otomo yoshishide play last week). |
...So yeah, Kirk Hammett and James Hetfield.

You're the one who brought up musicianship. While I do think there is too much praise for certain people who wear their technical ineptitude like it's some kind of badge of honor or cred, not every technically limited player automatically sucks. You know, just like how people can be quite proficient and make shitty music despite their abilities. I thought the debate was about taste. I do think people should try and at least become better/more versatile players as their lives progress, but this happens naturally if you keep challenging yourself. |

I don't want to argue much on this point, as SY is one of my fav bands and have been for a long time, however i have to disagree to certain degree in regards to the vocals and lyrics departments especially with the songs on Rather Ripped. The vocals sound very good, with the harmonizing and such evident especially on the Kim songs where she hasn't sounded much better in recent years however in a live setting its been very hit and miss in the vocal department, but that can be said with almost any band live. Lyrically, i think Rather Ripped is one of their weakest moments, like the lyrics in "Sleepin' Around" and "What A Waste" take the prize for "...huh? what? i don't get it what the heck does that mean?..." and about changing the subject, how does anything you said reference Guitar Duos? No need to curse us out... I still think you're one of the good posters on this board. |
