I like Fifth Element a lot. It's too long of course but one element of the film really sticks out to me.

The main hero and the main villian of the film never have an onscreen appearance together.

arlington road was good.

a scanner darkly one more time! yeah

atsonicpark 08.27.2008 05:34 AM

Arlington Road was pretty decent until the last half hour when it got retarded.

Loved the ending however.

nicfit 08.27.2008 05:35 AM

Adam, just curious (maybe this has been already brought up in this thread), what's your "vote" for ghosts of mars?

atsonicpark 08.27.2008 05:40 AM

I saw about a third of it on TV one time a few years ago and don't really remember it. Just from what I remember, probably a 4 or 5 I guess? Hmph.

cars_willkillyou 08.27.2008 05:41 AM

loved scanner darkly. My only complaint is that they stuck with one style of animation, unlike Waking Life. I know they are completely different movies, but its the same director. I would vote Waking Life as a better overall movie.

But that is my personal opinion. And I still love scanner darkly.

atsonicpark 08.27.2008 05:44 AM

Scanner Darkly was alright. Nothing special. Waking Life was also alright. I think Waking Life was a lot better.

Anyway, since you asked for it (right?), nicfit, here's every John Carpenter movie I've seen, rated!:

Pro-Life (2006) - 3/10
Cigarette Burns (2005) - 6/10
Escape From L.A. (1996) - 6/10
Village of The Damned (1995) - 2/10
In the Mouth of Madness (1995) - 8/10
Body Bags (1993) - 5/10
Memoirs of an Invisible Man (1992) 5/10
They Live (1988) 9/10
Prince of Darkness (1987) - never seen
Big Trouble in Little China (1986) - 7/10
Starman (1984) - 7/10
Christine (1983) - 5/10
The Thing (1982) - 5/10 (controversial rating? I found it really boring and lame)
Escape from New York (1981) - 8/10
The Fog (1980) - 6/10
Halloween (1978) - Probably a 7/10. I realize it should get a 10/10 for its "importance" but I personally don't find it all that entertaining. Hell, the shitty sequel is about a thousand times more entertaining!
Assault On Precinct 13 (1976) - 8/10

Forgetting Sarah Marshall (much much much better than expected, and, damn, Meg Griffin grew up nicely...), I know it's not a masterpiece or anything, but guys, you have no idea how much WORSE italian actors are when it comes to modern lighthearted comedies these days...

Hellboy II the golden army visually stunning,

fifth element - ba daaa bum

i think fifth element is a modern classic. It was my favorite movie for the 2 years after it came out i think. Definitely one of.

Hellboy I will probably never see. I didnt care for the comic. The character bores the hell out of me. and the first movie was horrible. I actually turned it off half way through.

I have heard a few things about forgetting sarah marshall, and have been tempted to see it. I might have to get around to it very soon.

I am just now starting to get money again. I was introduced to Firefly during a 6 month period of being completely broke. I am about to buy both the movie and the series...or season rather. With those purchases, my dvd collection will have doubled.

Unless you count each star wars movie seperate.

:D

yeh, it's nothing too special after all, action movies with some good visuals. really good visuals, in the second episode, but if you are not interested in the characters or selma blair at all there are not many good reasons to watch it.

I feel you on the "no money-no dvds" issue, I'd love to buy loads of stuff I like, but it's not easy...especially when there are more important/unavoidable outcomes.

Adam, those a pretty accurate judgments imo, I'd maybe give 8 to "big trouble.." and bring up to a 6 the thing and christine.

haven't seen pro-life or cigarette burns, nor village of the damned.

i will borrow walking life or something, and we will see. i like scanner darkly for rotoscoping, keanu reeves (good acting), awesome robert downey jr. and the plot, based on PKD. I'm kinda fan of his books (ubik, three sigmata, valis) and the movie is very similiar to his style.

Tokolosh 08.27.2008 07:21 AM

Joan Cusack is pure evil in Arlington Road.

I watched the restored version of Erich von Stroheim's Greed (1924) last night. Phenomenal!

atsonicpark 08.27.2008 08:03 AM

No idea.

I don't know what to think about Kubrick, I've watched sf canon: 2001: Space Odyssey, and it's mystic movie, i like that kind of movies, but too long, and borring.. Shining much better, Jack Nicholson with his fury! :D so it's time for Clockwork Orange.

atsonicpark 08.27.2008 11:17 AM

I've seen every Kubrick film except Dr. Strangelove, and I love them all except for Eyes Wide Shut.
