He felt more socially relevant in the 80s. Not just for the subject matter; his excessive style kind of chimed with the time too. Reminds me a bit of Martin Amis in that sense.

oh right, i remember wanting to see the draughtsman’s contract after the z-00 commentary
went looking for it on amazon prime but needs some sort of extra subscription. i put it on my list anyway for when theres a chance they do however have the pillow book. superbaroque indeed. i do not mind. will rewatch soon. they also have the baby of macôn— which appears christmassy in subject hahaha—some mysterious virgin birth. reviews appear mixed but i’ll check it out anyway. speaking of which, still trying to locate my favorite xmas movie—brazil. o i wanna watch that this season. might have a dvd lost in storage... |

The Overnight
Exam |
Not sure. But last week I came across the Gilmore Girls Seasons on dvd so bought it and watched it over a couple nights.
|
A friend insisted on watching Martyrs when he came over the other night. I warned him but would he listen? So we watched it then he went home with a look on his face like he'd just been diagnosed with a terminal illness.

Never seen that. Don’t get it. Is it super upsetting or something? |
Finally watched GET OUT!
Lots to unpack. More later. |

this past season i looked for it but i couldn’t find it. i’ve only found the american remake, which is supposedly a piece of shit. so i skipped that—and possibly dodged a bullet in the process. |
Get Out is good. It’s not a particularly brilliant *film* but it’s full of interesting and even profound ideas about the insidisousnes of racism.
It maybe deserves a best director, or best original screenplay nod, but probably not Best Picture. Still... good movie! |

Fucking grim film that. I actually got that on a whim having never actually heard of it. Fuck me, talk about going in blind. Ill this to sev, knowing what you've said from past films I honestly don't think itd be your bag. Don't think you'd make it to the end anyroad (I don't say that in a patronising way, just going off what you've said before) |

No, I gotcha. I’ve been vocal about my inability to handle certain kinds of realistic violence/brutality/pornography — movies like Irreversible or Nine and a Half Weeks or even Nocturnal Animals... they upset me tremendously. So I will trust you on this one. Thanks for that, actually. |
2nd watching of Star Wars: The Last Jedi
Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back Secretary |

The violence is extremely graphic but what I found hardest to deal with was the underlying idea behind it all. The film is quite theological/philosophical in the way it examines pain and humiliation as a kind of path towards transcendence. This sets it above torture-porn films like Saw and if anything makes it even more disturbing. |

Yeah I watched the trailer. I will not ever be watching this film unless I’m lobotomized or someone forced it on me. Nope. Negatory. |

How’d you like Last Jedi? I’m hearing some great reactions from critics, but oddly fans seem to be having mixed reactions. I think I understand something about one of the film’s “reveals” or whatever, but I’m not sure. Just kind of guessing, based on poster art and some of the negative fan responses I’ve read. |

Thing is, the trailer is tied down. The film starts off one way then goes WEST to where you to think it's going. As Demo said, it does set itself a step apart from the usual torture porn. But fuck me, that doesn't make it any less harrowing. Probably more in a lot of ways. Mainly cos it's focused on one person, as opposed to multiple characters you're actually willing to get fucked off. ANYWAY! onto to films not as grim. I bought me Mrs tickets to go to Harry Potter world. However, I'd never seen the films beyond the first two. Months went by then I realised a week last Sunday that we'd be going the following Friday. So with that, I managed to cram all 7 films within 5 days. What can you say about them? They're a fine watch, even just from the perspective of the set designs. Not sure I get why the Mrs (or millions of other people) love them so much, but hey, the things you do for love, right? |
