A ZED AND TWO NOUGHTS
Peter Greenaway, 1985

slow and a little too long? yes. but ambitious and brilliant and deranged just the right way also.

reminded me a lot of "26 bathrooms" --from the music to film's aspect ratio to the alphabet thing to other small details, but this is a HUUUUUGE project, unlike the bathroom one.

opening shot

(but they use 26 kinds of lighting throughout the movie)

here's a trailer i haven't seen but i'm just gonna link

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s_yia2nqt6U

worth watching the intro and commentary in the disc

I heard this was pretty shit. I love mob movies (good ones), but I'm not one of those people who fawns over Johnny Depp. He hasn't given a knock-out performance since Ed Wood in, like, 1995. I never got the appeal actually. His best films have been the two Burton-Depp collabs that didn't suck (Edward Scissorhands and the aforementioned.)

I'll bet this was a bit like Killing Them Softly, another mob movie that felt like a million other mob movies. I had high hopes for KTS because I love Brad Pitt and I don't care what anyone has to say to that by way of snark. Man's delivered some great performances (The Assasination of Jesse James..., Moneyball, 12 Monkeys), but this was a rare miss for him.

I love brad pitt too.

THE DISCREET CHARM OF THE BOURGEOISIE (Buñuel, '72)

just fucking brilliant, i hadn't seen it in aaaaages, but better and funnier than i ever remembered. everyone should know this movie well, because it has great jokes.

pepper_green 12.10.2016 11:26 PM

oh mi god, I so love brad pitt too! but, too bad Pitt didn't do a great example of acting and emulating like Depp did as an historic figure in Fear and Loathing.

Pitt couldn't act his way out a shoe store and never will.... pretty boy badass is easy to emulate. Pitt over Depp?... yr fucking crazy!!!!

Depp all the way! yo, im serious!!!

it's actually pretty decent. nothing could compare to Killing Them Softly, which is a waste of film and everyone's time and god almighty himself.

also, Baron Munchausen is one of the greatest films ever but, im a dork.

I like Brad Pitt but I wouldn't say he's as good an actor as Johnny Depp, who I generally don't like but have to admit he's an excellent actor. Brad Pitt's in that category of 'better than you'd expect', for me, but no more than that.

It's OK if you're a fan of the genre, just not in the top league. Depp is fine but I'd say its the supporting cast that really stands out.

Possession

One of the weirdest horror films ever. The kind you can watch over and over again trying to get your head around it. Brilliant.

pepper_green 12.11.2016 07:34 AM

Possession disturbed the fuck out of me. I watched it not long after I broke up with a girlfriend.

haven't watched it since. oh yeah, it's brilliant alright! if you want to get fucked in the head extra hard after a break up.

Brad Pitt's like Cary Grant. He brings a certain "Brad Pitiness" to all of his roles, and sort of bends the part to his will. Like I mentioned earlier when talking about Keanu. It's not great method or character acting, but it's still pretty great, pretty consistently.

It's obvious that Johnny Depp is very talented, but I can count his good performances on one hand. His shitty ones, I'd need all my digits. And I can't even remember half of his roles, so.. yeah.

Killing them Softly was super shit, it's true. Also excessively violent if I remember correctly, without much of a story to hold it up.

ROBIN HOOD: MEN IN TIGHTS
(mel brooks, '93)

some jokes are a incomprehensible unless you were alive in the 90s AND saw the keving costner robin hood, but it remains a piece of high-quality goofy shit. plenty of really stupid jokes to laugh at-- yes, you laugh because it's so stupid, not because the joke itself works. so it works.

great cast and all--a young chapelle, the dread pirate roberts, brooks himself, richard lewis, a hot redhead i don't know her name but works great here, some english guy who always plays a douche, even a picard cameo... dom deluise as marlon brando had me laughing the hardest though--that shit is unforgettable.

Hah. I know exactly what you mean because I saw both this and Prince of Thieves in the theater when they first came out (fuck I feel old).

Not one of Mel's best, but definitely good for a larf. Haven't seen this thing in ages.

Severian 12.11.2016 03:59 PM

That redhead was a cutie. Wasn't she on Wings at some point?

tw2113 12.11.2016 04:03 PM

She was in Problem Child as well, if I recall right, without simply looking her up on IMDB
