Hate Being Sober is a fucking anthem! 50 dropped his verse in years on that one. even though he doesn't really do drugs.

new Deerhunter single is awesome! noisy as fuck. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bYUENZQ84-E

Severian 04.03.2013 06:19 AM

I'm glad to hear that. I've been expecting that band's decline to begin since 2007. Never seems to happen. Ok... Well, into iTunes then.

I thought it was really shit...

deerhunter were like the formative contemporary 'indie rock' band for me, but I can't help but feel that subsequent to logos brad's and their work has just gotten progressively weaker. halcyon digest had a couple of great songs (desire lines is probably the best thing they've put their name to) but for the most part it was nigh-on mindless drivel, filler that cox can seemingly churn out in his sleep. parallax was the nail in the coffin for me. what was previously special about them was the way that they made these old trends sound new, but those albums really saw him and the band succumb to flat revivalism.

I can't help but think that monomania will be the same. it's now ultra-stylized, the grit is so contrived it's painful to watch, whereas cryptograms was a genuinely dirge-y piece of work and microcastle/fluorescent grey were emotionally honest and thereby appealing.

I'll still give it a listen though, they're still a phenomenally talented band. I simply wish they'd cut the fucking act and just be a solid group who can play siq kraut-gaze jammerzzzz.

I really love Deerhunter.

Anyway, WOLF is pretty excellent.

louder 04.03.2013 06:41 PM

i thought Halcyon Digest was gorgeous. i'm really excited about their new album.

I just listened to Microcastle after reading your comments about Monomania.
I think it's their worst record. It's good, and even great at moments (Little Kids), but as a follow up to Cryptograms and ...Faggot it just didn't meet my expectations more up my alley. Halcyon Digest is just a great basement pop album. Plays like Pavement at times, but grows on you like '80s REM.

I also really love the first two Atlas Sound albums. Pretty much my idea of perfect music. The last one was terrible, but I'm hoping for a redemptive fourth release.

Oh, right... Hip hop. Well, anyone hear the new Cam'ron? I haven't because Im still listening to Wolf and trying to think of a more accurate comparison group than Wu Tang.

Stumped.

Pharcyde? No...
Black Sheep? Kinda, maybe, no.
Ghetto Boys? Hmm. Interesting.

Louder, NR:

How are you two feeling about IANAHB 2? One listen had me reaching for Tha Carter III, but I feel I should give it more of a chance.

louder 04.03.2013 06:50 PM

kinda hated it for the most part. :( Wayne doesn't care about music at all anymore. i miss C3 era so much.

louder 04.03.2013 06:52 PM

and yeah i just finished listening to "Logos" by Atlas Sound, such a beautiful and soothing experience.

noisereductions 04.03.2013 07:52 PM

OK let's see....

1. Cam has a new album???

2. IANAHB2 is pretty bad. But a lot of that is cuz it's 18 tracks. It could be a good like 10 song album. But 18, and he's got almost nothing to talk about? Too much. There's good songs though. They're just mostly buried in too much filler.

3. Atlas Sound is legit. But Let The Blind is preferred to Logos.

4. Deerhunter is great. Turn It Up is meh. Cryptograms is excellent. Microcastles is amazing in my opinion. my favorite. Weird Era is pretty good. Halcyon was very very great. Looking fwd to the new one.

...I don't know what just happend you guys.

Severian 04.04.2013 06:28 AM

Same thing's been happening to me.

Anyway, I see guest's losing love fast for Deerhunter. Have faith! I thought I was alone in believing them to be "THE" band of the era for indie noise pop dirge, etc. I'm glad to hear you felt the same way, and yes Parallax was fucking awful, but that wasn't Deerhunter now, was it?

They're a great band and they're progression from dirgey noise filth prog-punk to dirgy noise filth prog-pop brings to mind Sonic Youth, especially since they've made the transition so well. And if any album stands out as a flop, it can still easily be attributed to probability at this point, and made up for by awesome subsequent releases.

I have not listened to the Monomania single yet, because I'm actually a little nervous now. But I have confidence in that scrawny beautiful creep's ability to make the kind of music that people like us thought was reserved for "ye olde indie bands of yore" ... By which I mean '80s underground and college shit.

Lets keep the faith guys.

Also, for the sale of the thread, I'll just mention that I've got a killer career spanning mix called Jay-Z VS Nas: You're Not Worthy. It goes back and forth between the two artists, one track at a time, in chronological order, using the best songs they've recorded.

I know the title sucks, but it's a fucking masterpiece and a fucking blast to listen to at work.
Btw: Jay-Z seems to be winning in every era except for the later '90s.

noisereductions 04.04.2013 05:32 PM

sev, you need to hear this mixtape:

it is every one of the tracks aimed at each other from the beef, chronologically. Fucking awesome archival material.
